Abai Village

About the attraction

People who came down from Hamgyong province during the Korean War settled on this sandbar in Sokcho's Cheongho-dong. Abai is a Hamgyong word for an older man. A flat ferry called the gaetbae crosses between the village and the town — it has no engine, and passengers haul it over on a steel cable with hooks. The lanes are lined with places selling the food they brought with them: abai sausage, squid sausage, pollack-jerky cold noodles.
